📋 Kentucky Title & Paperwork

Can I Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Kentucky?

Short answer: Kentucky requires a title to transfer a vehicle. If yours is lost, the fix is straightforward — apply for a duplicate title through your county clerk's office, then sign it over at pickup.

Kentucky Is a Title State

Kentucky does not have a "skip the title" shortcut for older vehicles. Titling is overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), Division of Motor Vehicle Licensing, and title transfers and registration are handled at your county clerk's office. The signed title is the key transfer document, and a bill of sale is recommended to back it up.

What you need to have in order:

  • ✅ A title in your name, signed over to the buyer in the seller section
  • ✅ No active liens (or a lien release if the loan was paid off)
  • ✅ Your valid photo ID
  • ✅ A bill of sale from the buyer (we provide it)

What you need to bring to the pickup:

  • 📄 Valid photo ID (Kentucky driver's license or state ID)
  • 📄 The signed title (or the duplicate title you ordered)
  • 📄 Bill of sale (we provide the form at pickup)
  • 🔑 Keys to the vehicle

If Your Title Is Lost or Missing

You'll need to order a duplicate title before we can complete the purchase. Here's the general process:

  1. Apply through your county clerk's office for a duplicate title.
  2. Bring your photo ID and, if you have them, your registration or proof of ownership.
  3. Pay the applicable duplicate title fee.
  4. Wait for the duplicate to arrive (timing varies by county).
  5. Once received, sign the back and we'll handle the rest.

The exact documents and fees are set by the county clerk and KYTC, so call your clerk's office to confirm what they need before you go in.

Special Situations

🚗 Inherited / Deceased Owner

The estate generally has to be settled before the vehicle can be sold. That usually means the title is transferred to the estate or the heir through the county clerk before it can be signed over to a buyer. Bring the certified death certificate and whatever estate paperwork the clerk requires.

🔧 Outstanding Loan / Lien

If there's an active lien, we cannot buy the car — the lender holds a legal interest. If you've paid off the loan but the title still shows a lien, you'll need a Lien Release Letter from the lender.

🌪️ Out-of-State Title

We accept titles from other states as long as the title is properly signed over to us and matches your valid ID. Kentucky generally requires a VIN inspection (handled by a sheriff or the county clerk, depending on the county) when transferring an out-of-state title.

What Happens to My Liability After I Sell?

The moment we pay you and you sign the bill of sale and title, the vehicle becomes ours. We handle the title reassignment through the proper channels. To fully clear yourself, remove your plate and handle the registration at the county clerk — that's what takes your name off the vehicle for future tolls, tickets, and accidents.

Skip the paperwork hassle

Once your title is in hand, we handle the bill of sale and title reassignment at pickup. You sign, we handle the rest.
